Re: OK .... FOR MY MONEY ALTEC/HAFLER/DYNACO AND GRUNDIG
Fri, March 10, 2006 - 10:23 AMVintage gear looks really nice and usually has robust build quality.
But in terms of ultimate performance, you can't beat the new high end stuff. I'd take the new stuff from Thiel, Krell, Mark Levinson, etc., etc. anyday over vintage gear.

Re: OK .... FOR MY MONEY ALTEC/HAFLER/DYNACO AND GRUNDIG
Tue, May 16, 2006 - 1:09 PMFor the budget conscious vintage gear is the way to go. I'd much rather have a Dynaco ST70 and the matching tube preamp than just about any integrated for under $1200. The last ST-70 I saw went for $300 and the preamp went for $200. not that I gonna get rid of my CJ/Cary/EAR set up in favor of this, but the Dynaco represents real value for the money. They are also REALLY easy to work on and upgrade. I still use a Scott 360B FM tuner which I paid a wopping $40 for at a swapmeet and the things sounds great. -

Re: OK .... FOR MY MONEY ALTEC/HAFLER/DYNACO AND GRUNDIG
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 10:20 AMYes, I agree the Dynas are relatively inexpensive and easy to work on. The prices you quote are of course for unrestored units; you can get them that cheaply on eBay if you're patient. Add about $200 + the cost to retube if you want one ready to go without doing the work yourself. For those who want to restore an ST-70 themselves, I sell a kit with all the necessary parts and instructions:

I usually have one up on eBay:

Re: OK .... FOR MY MONEY ALTEC/HAFLER/DYNACO AND GRUNDIG
Sat, March 22, 2008 - 6:37 PMthe only thing I don't like about working on Dynacos is that the circuit boards are really cheapo and tend to peel up and break the circuit path. It's not that big a deal as you can always patch it back together somehow, but it's kind of inconvenient. I have a pas 2 and have had monoblocks and listened to some one elses ST-70 that I worked on. I haven't been that impressed I guess. -

Re: OK .... FOR MY MONEY ALTEC/HAFLER/DYNACO AND GRUNDIG
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 2:00 PMYes, it is recommend that those cheap old circuit boards be replaced! I usually have ST-70 boards in my eBay store:

You can usually find bare or stuffed boards for other Dynacos such as the PAS-2 by searching for "Dynaco board". -

Re: OK .... FOR MY MONEY ALTEC/HAFLER/DYNACO AND GRUNDIG
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 9:47 PMI think one ST-70 I worked on actually did have a replacement board/circuit. Cant' remember much about it now. Maybe it was yours! -

Re: OK .... FOR MY MONEY ALTEC/HAFLER/DYNACO AND GRUNDIG
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:17 AMThere are many of them. Some are not the original circuit b/c 7199 tubes are getting hard to find... -

Re: OK .... FOR MY MONEY ALTEC/HAFLER/DYNACO AND GRUNDIG
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 6:07 PMGood riddance to 7199, that tube is really noise prone. I remember trouble shooting an amp forever because every single 7199 I put in either channel was noisy, including some of what I thought were NOS, and probably were. Out of a double handful or so I finally found a couple of quite ones. That was a good lesson for me. Anyway I think this was a new circuit... maybe 6bl8..

Re: OK .... FOR MY MONEY ALTEC/HAFLER/DYNACO AND GRUNDIG
Sat, November 8, 2008 - 5:19 AMOk....I have a current set up that cost around $500 total. Most of this went on the speakers which I pieced together from separate Craigslist ads. Essentially they are Altec Model 19's in appearance. I could not find the stock horns/hf drivers though so I subbed in a pair of contemporary Aluminium JBL horns and powered them with Selenium HF drivers. They cost about $300 in parts total. I spent another $100 having them time aligned by a tech(y) friend of mine. This step in the process (involving the building of custom crossovers) delayed the debut of these speakers in my living room by one and a half years! Don't ever expect "audio experts" to deliver to deadline when it comes to custom projects! Anyway, I am powering these speakers with a HAFLER 500 that I found for a $100 at a garage sale and an AMC chinese tube pre amp that I purchased at the SOUNDWELL in Berkeley for about a $100. So given that this post was about value and not "ultimate" sound quality, I would be interested in hearing from any challengers in the "best value" arena. I am sure there are several of you out there!
