Klipsch IMAGE earbuds

Has anyone heard them?

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/headphones/klipsch-image-are-the-smallest-in+canal-earphones-yet-295287.php

How do they compare to the ER-4P and the Sure SE530?

There are some amazon reviews, but I almost NEVEr trust those. Every single review, from the $29.99 Sony earbuds on up, says something like:

"The sound quality is AMAZING! I hear details in the music this that I have never heard with my (stock iPod / Radio Shack) earbuds. I could hear the guitarist picking his nose and flicking a booger onto to the floor! This is a true audiophile listening experience! GET THESE!"

Sound-dampeners behind bipolar speakers?

I have this idea that putting a small 24x24 inch chunk of sound absorbing foam material behind my bipolar speakers would make them sound better. I just wonder if the echo off the bare wall from the rear-firing speakers are adding garbage to the sound.

What do you think?

I'm a sucker for 60's and 70's gear. Most of my stereo and PA stuff was made long before I was.

I'm wondering how you guys feel about tubes and alnico speakers etc. I mean, don't these modify the sound on some level? I call it adding tone, but some would just call it color, which is the same thing, but color is often viewed as a bad thing by audiophiles isn't it?

Hi Folks,
We recently released our debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles with some eastern european influences also.

I thought it might be suitable for this group because we spent lots of time on the production, and on a decent system - even if I say so myself - it sounds great!

Anyway, there's four full tracks available to listen online.

http://www.nomadiqa.com

Have a listen and see what you think. Sorry for the self-promotion.

Many thanks,

splicing headphones

Hey folks

This is a newbie question that may not be "audiophile" per se, but I'd still appreciate some help.

I have some Bose Triport headphones that I love. They started shorting out close to the plug, and the warranty is expired, so I figured I'd try splicing in a new termination. I chopped out the end and have tried splicing to stereo 3.5mm ends twice, but I get nothing. Not even a teensy, weensy little cough suggesting there's current on the live audio.

What gives? I've spliced connections before and never had any problems. Am I crazy, or do more slightly more expensive headphones ($180) not use the standard right channel/ground left channel/ground four-conductor gambit?

I picked up a set of these guys for ten bucks at a tag sale in the rich part of town...

had to do a little sidewalk surgery to get one of the subs to work (loose wire inside the box) but other than that they are fine.

Hard to find speakers that still have the original velcro-on covers and fabric.

they're in really great shape..

any info on these guys would help out a bit...tried googling them, but couldn't come up with much in the way of info...i believe they're late 70's early 80's, adjustible high and midrange terriffic sounding speakers...great compliment to my Kenwood

Best Solder

From Analogue-Heaven.. had to pass it on!

-------------------

>What sort of solder would you recommend? I have a colleague who's
>a rabid audiophile, and he thinks silver solder is the way forward.

Tell your audiophile friend that if he really wants the very best
sound, the only way to go is with Gold Solder. That's right, Gold.
It makes that silver solder stuff look like something from Radio
Shack. Now, we don't want you spreading this information around to
just anyone, so try to keep it on the down-low. You can tell your
friend about it, but don't tell him where you heard it.

BTW, the Gold Solder sounds best when soldered with a Platinum Tip
soldering iron. The industry-standard Weller soldering tip is the
Weller PT7. The special Platinum Tip version of that is the PT-PT7.
Afterward. the excess flux should be cleaned off using a 40/60
mixture of 98% pure alcohol and Nicolas Feuillatte Palmes D'orGrand
Cuvee 1985 Champagne -- and always from a freshly opened 750 ml
magnum. When done with the flux cleaning, immediately pour any
excess bubbly down the drain. Your Gold Solder joints will somehow
know if you have betrayed them by selfishly drinking any of the flux
remover, and as a result, your audio will have a poorly-defined
soundstage, noticeably attenuated "air", flatulently loose low-end,
and a curious 2.1dB bump at around 4.3 KHz.

But again, keep it on the down-low.

Before some of you waste your money on overpriced cabling, here's some educational reading...

http://bluejeanscable.com/articles/index.htm

http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/audioprinciples/cables.htm

I work in this industry, and I know what makes a good cable. I'm sick of seeing people getting ripped off by companies selling so-called "audiophile" quality cable at horrendously high prices. To be truthful, there is no true "audiophile" quality standard. It's a buzzword that these companies use to inflate thier claims and pricing around.

A prime example...An unamed company was selling 24K gold tipped "audiophile" optical cables at over $250 per meter. Can you see what is wrong with this picture? First of all, 90% of the fiber optic cable on the market is exactly the same stuff, and secondly - gold tipped optical cables ? Are you shitting me? Gold is used as a conductor...OPTICAL CABLES USE LIGHT!!!

surround question

HI, I just got a Marantz surround receiver and I am enjoying it quite a bit. I love the geek factor of plugging in my DVD and Comcast DVR audio into via fiber optics. Also, I like that I can use the S/PDIF out on my .mp3 player to bypass the crappy D/As and headphone amp on my .mp3 player and use the high-quality D/A on the marantz instead.

One question though, for just watching regular TV, I want to pick a surround setting that will put most of the mono sound (like dialog) into my center channel (which is my TV speakers). Any idea which is best for this? Right now, all the surround modes seem to put most of the audio to my left/right mains.

Most TV shows seem to only output a stereo signal, while pay per view movies have full surround.

Anyone else have any expereince with Comcast surround sound? I have set my cable box to "matrix", which is suppose to be the digital surround mode.
nakamichi receiver

Hi all,

I have my old Nakamichi RE-2 receiver that I no longer need. It works very well, except for the remote control, which has very limited range. The thing sounds great though. Its only 65 watts but very clean. It has a nice, sleek minimal design. No photos of it online yet, but let me know if you would be interested. It would be perfect to power a pair of high-end bookshelf speakers. I used it on my Definitve Technology speakers for years and it sounds.

There are some reviews of it here:

http://www.audioreview.com/Receivers/Nakamichi/PRD_118904_1593crx.aspx

Let me know if you would be interested, I could make a good deal for it.

Hi, I am looking for a small, 8-10" subwoofer. I already have full-sized Definitive Technology speakers, but just want to unload some bass from them. I am much more into tight, detailed sound over raw power. I want to spend under $300.

Any recomendations?

thanks,
Is there any good place in San Francisco or east bay, where you can try/compare several different models before bying them?

I'm searching for a car system that makes me feel the bass but doesn't shake the car. Something with crisp sound, but not over-doing it. Do you recommend anything? Any particular brand you like? I'm getting everything; the main dashboard unit, speakers, subwoofer, so if you've had good experiences with any of the three, please do share.

Greetings Audiophiles,

I heard in the late 60's Jimmy Page took a trip to Turkey and was turned onto a musical artist (and some other things as well i'm sure) named Talipoxazan. This music influenced the Led Zepplin sound. I tried google(ing) the name to no avail. Does anyone have any idea where I can get some of these tracks? Maybe my spelling is wrong? Any 411 would be great.

Crappy Gear

Hey, I was just posting a message as a reply elsewhere in this tribe when I got to thinking, what other gear sucks and needs to be tossed out into the open air.

I elect most of the turntable equipment marketed to DJs. Granted, most Djs and turntablists couldn't hear a barn door close, so it may not matter. But, when I started buying vinyl I, like the sheep, got herded into picking up dj equipment. only years later did I realize it sucked acoustically. What a ton of wasted dough. And to think, for the money it cost to get the dj set-up i could of had a used vpi scout, sumiko blue special, and a decent amp (at least).

Who else has horror stories?

anyone have anything to say about them. or maybe suggestions for other powered nearfield monitors that aren't going to cost me a small fortune (probably something less than $500/pair)

Are you HI FI MEN

I mean men in a figurative sense here, so dont shy away you hi fi women. But the subject is a disclaimer. I am offering a fierce recommendation here, not for the light audiophile hearted.

I post it in this site because an interest in audiophile is usually accompanied by a record procurement sensibility that address a wide ranging and open minded approach to the record obsession. For instance, if you fancy yourself a record man because you have a lot of bumpin dance 12''s, can throw a party where a lot of people get laid, and trick your nonmusical friends into thinking that dj-ing is so shiek and vinyl savvy, but have never ventured into the realm of living stereo or mosaic box sets, then get lost. You are not a record man and should not follow this recommendation.

But I digress, the recommendation is: join the phonogram mailing list. This link has instructions http://www.laventure.net/tourist/internet.htm as well as other lists and aother things entirely (all record related).

The phonogram list is terrifying as collecting monsters come at it with the full brunt of their seething, disturbing, obsession. The amount of information available through the phonogram list is extreme but you have to sort it out from the personalities that come forth (which are basically like a bunch of children kicking screaming and fighting). But, whose to judge the emotional discrepencies and instabilities of record collectors?
